COMMITTEE FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

UPDATE ON SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT INQUIRY

Thank you for taking the time to register your interest in the Sustainable Transport Inquiry which is being conducted by the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Regional Development Committee.

Since the Committee issued its call for evidence in July 2009, it received an Executive Bill which has had to be given priority in the Committee’s work programme. As a result, it has been necessary to change the timing of the Sustainable Transport Inquiry.

The Committee remains committed to the Sustainable Transport Inquiry and is working to reschedule this important area into its work programme for this session. A new timetable for the inquiry will be published by the end of November 2009.

The Committee is encouraged to have received almost twenty written submissions from the following organizations and individuals:

ACIS (Advanced Communications and Information Systems) UK
Belfast Healthy Cities
Belfast City Cycle
Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport ( UK)
Community Transport Association
Community Transport Association
Energy Savings Trust
Imtac
Institute of Public Health in Ireland
Northern Ireland Environment Link
Parker Green International
Rural Community Network
Sustainable Development Commission Northern Ireland
Sustrans
WWF Northern Ireland
Wright Group

Mr Arthur Acheson, Architect and City Planner
Prof Julian Hine, (Academic) Build Environment Research Institute, UU
Mr Lee Wilson

These written submissions will be posted on the Committee’s webpage in the coming weeks. The inquiry webpage has also attracted further written comments from individual members of the public.

The Committee acknowledges the range and depth of issues to be discussed and will consider all submissions. Following an evaluation of the submissions received, it is the intention of the Committee to hold oral evidence sessions. Invitations will be issued in due course.

Thank you for your interest in the work of the Regional Development Committee. The Committee apologizes for the change in the inquiry timetable, and looks forward to resuming work on this interesting and important area.
