COMMITTEE REPORTS ON SCHOOLS ADMISSION POLICY

The Committee on the Programme for Government has published its report on Schools Admission Policy.

This is the second report on the work that the Committee has been carrying out since November 2006.

The Committee noted that, as a result of section 21 of the Northern Ireland (St. Andrews Agreement) Act 2006, academic selection was not prohibited. While there was not consensus on its continued use as part of the admission criteria, the Committee did call for further research on the experience of transfer at age fourteen. The members of the Committee and the sub-group had a number of concerns about the proposals for the schools admission policy and the pupil profile. These are set out in detail in the report and the Committee has written to the Secretary of State setting out its concerns and has asked him to take action, urgently, on a number of the recommendations.
