SUB GROUP SCRUTINISES SCHOOLS ADMISSION POLICY
The sub-group on Schools Admission Policy today began work on scrutinising policy on schools admission and pupil profiles.
The sub-group, which was set up by the Committee on the Programme for Government on 27 November, will examine the proposed new post-primary admission arrangements by considering the pupil profile and the admission criteria for over subscribed schools.
At today’s meeting, members heard evidence from the Department of Education and resolved to hear evidence from a number of key stakeholders next week.
Jim Wells, MLA, who chaired today’s meeting said:
"The sub-group is concerned to ensure that any decisions on schools admission policy provide the best solution for the children of Northern Ireland".

The Terms of Reference of the Sub-Group on the Schools Admissions Policy are:-
- To examine the proposed new post-primary admission arrangements including:
- The Pupil Profile
- The Admissions criteria* for over-subscribed schools including any specific number or combination of criteria to be included and whether the criteria should be applied in a specific sequence
- To identify any other appropriate arrangements that may be considered
To report to the Committee on the Programme for Government by 10 January 2007
* Note: In the consultation document on new admissions arrangements the criteria were grouped under the broad categories of
- Family-Focused Criteria;
- Community-Based Criteria;
- Geographical Criteria; and
- Tiebreakers
