MEMBERSHIP OF THE ASSEMBLY The Belfast Agreement provided for 108 Assembly Members (known as Members of the Legislative Assembly – MLAs), with six elected members to represent each of the 18 Northern Ireland parliamentary constituencies. Elections to the Assembly were held on 25 June 1998. The attached list of Members shows the membership of the Assembly at the time of dissolution. There were, however, three changes to membership during the period of the mandate, namely: John Hume (SDLP) resigned from the Assembly on 1 December 2000, to be replaced by Annie Courtney (SDLP) who took her seat on 12 December 2000. Tom Benson (UUP) died on 24 December 2000 and was replaced by Tom Hamilton (UUP) who took his seat in the Assembly on 29 January 2001. Arthur Doherty (SDLP) resigned from the Assembly on
31 August 2002, to be replaced by Michael Coyle (SDLP) on 2 September
2002. |
