Proceedings of the Environment Committee 1. Letter to Chairman Present were:- Rev Dr Wm McCrea MP (Chairman) In Attendance:- Mr J Simmons (Committee Clerk) Apologies:- Mr J Leslie The meeting commenced at 10.18am in Closed Session. 1. Letter to Chairman The Committee discussed a letter covering a range of sensitive issues received by the Chairman. Mrs J Carson joined the meeting at 10.20am. Agreed:- (i) To seek further legal advice; (ii) To seek the views of the Department. The meeting moved into Open Session at 10.45am. 2. Minutes of previous meetings. The minutes of the meetings held on 16 January 2001 and 18 January 2001 were agreed, subject to some minor amendments. 3. Matters Arising Public Hire Taxi Drivers Association - Department Response The Committee discussed the response to the questions sent to the Department. Agreed:- To refer the response to the Public Hire Taxi Drivers Association for comment. 4. McQuillan Skip Hire At 10.50am Mr Trevor Hazlett, Eastern Area Manager, Water Service joined the meeting. After giving a presentation on the role of the Water Service in connection with an earlier planning application for Derriaghy, Mr Hazlett answered questions from the members. The Chairman thanked Mr Hazlett for his presentation and he left the meeting at 11.15am. Agreed:- To write to Antrim Borough Council to advise them of the Committee's concerns. 5. Best Value Consultation Document The following officials from the Department joined the meeting at 11.22am:- Mr John McConnell The officials gave a presentation on the proposed "Best Value" legislation and answered questions from the members. Mr McLaughlin left the meeting at 12.10pm. The Chairman thanked the officials for their attendance and they left the meeting at 12.19pm. Agreed:- To seek the views of the Local Councils on the proposals. 6. Inquiry into the Transport used by Children travelling to and from School. Mrs Debbie Pritchard, NI Assembly Secretariat, joined the meeting at 12.20pm and the Committee discussed a first draft of the Report. Mrs Pritchard left the meeting at 12.37pm. Agreed:- To invite the representatives of the Education and Library Boards and Translink to attend the meeting on 1 February 2001 to clarify some matters. 7. 8. Error in calculating Penny Product The Committee discussed the letter from the Minister for Finance and Personnel, Mr Mark Durkan, regarding the errors made in 1997/98 and 1998/99. Mr D Ford left the meeting at 12.42pm. Agreed:- To raise the concerns of the Committee with DFP (via the DFP Committee). 9. Game Preservation Act (NI) 1928 The Committee discussed the proposed amendment to the Act. 10.
