AD HOC COMMITTEE MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS: MONDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2001 1. Apologies Present:Mr George Savage MLA, Chairperson
In Attendance:Mr Tony Logue, Committee Clerk 10.15am the meeting opened in public session. None. The Chairperson informed members that due to European engagements he would be unable to attend the next meeting. 3. Approval of draft minutes of previous proceeding The minutes were agreed and signed by the Chairperson. A research paper distinguishing the differences between the Sentence Review Commission and the Life Sentence Review Commission and a copy of section 71 of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 were noted. It was agreed that the Committee would write to the Secretary of State and senior officials from the Northern Ireland Office inviting them to give oral evidence on the draft Order. Action: Clerk The Chairperson informed members that The Law Society of Northern Ireland would not be accepting the Committee's invitation to provide oral or written evidence. The General Council of the Bar of Northern Ireland will endeavour to provide a written submission. 6. Evidence from the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission Evidence on the Life Sentences (NI) Order 2001 was taken from Professor Brice Dickson and Ms Maggs O'Conor from the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. It was agreed that they would forward additional information. 10.32am Mrs Bell joined the meeting. 7. Evidence from the Probation Board for Northern Ireland Evidence on the Life Sentences (NI) Order 2001 was taken from Mr Brendan Fulton and Mr Alan Darnbrook from the Probation Board for Northern Ireland. It was agreed that they would also forward additional information. 9. Date and time of future meetings The members agreed that the next two meetings of the Committee would be held on Tuesday 6 February 2001 at 2.00pm in Room 152, Parliament Buildings and Monday 12 February 2001 at 10.15am in Room 152 Parliament Buildings.
