Work at Parliament Buildings continues apace this week with a wide range of Assembly business and events taking place |

The Assembly Committee for Education will put forward a motion today which calls on the Minister for Education to develop an integrated Early Years Children’s Strategy and Action Plan. The Committee has decided to do this following a large number of concerns raised about the Department’s draft strategy to provide for the social and educational needs of young children from pre-birth to age six. You can read more about this here. The final stage of the Commissioner for Older People Bill will be debated in the Assembly on Tuesday. If passed, this bill will see the appointment of a Commissioner for Older People who will be given the power to tackle the many issues affecting older people in Northern Ireland. The final stage of Dawn Purvis’ MLA Private Member’s Bill is also scheduled for Tuesday. If passed, this will be the first Private Member’s Bill to be successful this mandate. The bill was brought forward by Dawn to put an end to politicians elected as Members of the Assembly also being local councillors. It’s a busy week ahead for Assembly Committees. Both the Committee for the Environment and Committee for Justice are holding extra meetings this week. The Committee for Environment is also holding its regular meeting on Thursday outside Parliament Buildings. The Committee will be at the Radisson Blu Roe Park hotel in Limavady. Members will combine committee business with a visit to the local Roe Valley Hydro Scheme. You can view the meeting agenda Enviro Agenda A group of young people will be here at Parliament Buildings on Thursday night to tell MLAs what they think of public transport. The Committee for Regional Development has invited them along and are keen to hear their views and give them the chance to have their say and help shape transport policy. What the Committee hear will be very useful in their work on sustainable transport. This week will also see a visit from members of the Ugandan Parliament, a Special Olympics NI Christmas reception and a fundraising concert for Mencap. |
