Explanatory Notes re Salaries and Allowances

Salaries

Basic Salaries

1. A Member's basic salary in 2010/11 was £43,101 per annum.

2. The Northern Ireland Assembly was dissolved on the 24 March 2011. Members・basic salaries remained unchanged up to and including the date of dissolution. For those Members who did not stand for re-election the basic salary was payable up to and including dissolution on a pro-rata basis. Members who stood for re-election continued to receive the basic salary up to and including the 5 May 2011.

3. Salaries of Members who ceased to be a Member during the year, through resignation, were paid on a pro-rata basis. Salaries for substitute Members were paid from the date on which the Roll of Membership of the Assembly was signed.

4. Those Members who received a salary as an MP had their Members・salaries reduced by two thirds up to and including the 30 June 2010. The Northern Ireland Assembly Members Act 2010 was effective from the 1 July 2010, prohibiting the payment of salaries to those Members in receipt of salaries from Westminster.

Office Holders Salaries

5. All Office Holders salaries were paid from 1 April 2010 to 24 March 2011. After the date of dissolution only salaries for the offices of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, First Minister, Deputy First Minister, Minister, Junior Minister and Assembly Commission Member continued to be paid up to 31 March 2011. All other Office Holders salaries ceased from the date of dissolution, until after the Assembly Election.

Voluntary Reductions in Salary

6. Member in receipt of salary as an MP opted to cease receiving a salary as an MLA from 1 June 2010.

7. From 1 September 2010, Member opted to take a reduction in Office Holders Salary equal to 5% of the combined total of MLA and Office Holder Salary to which they were entitled.
