HEALTH COMMITTEE TO MEET IN CRAIGAVON

Members of the public are invited to attend the next Assembly Health Committee meeting this week in Craigavon Area Hospital. The meeting will be held on Thursday 20 September 2007 at 2.15 pm in the Boardroom of the hospital. That morning, the Committee will visit the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.

Chairperson of the Committee, Iris Robinson MP, said: “The Health Committee believes it is important to hear at first hand from staff and patients and to visit health and social care related facilities right across Northern Ireland. The Committee is also keen to be accessible to the people of Northern Ireland and hold meetings outside Parliament Buildings. I believe it is important for the public to learn about the role of the Committee and to have the opportunity to see it in action.”

At the Meeting the Committee will continue consideration of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill which deals with the regulation of healthcare practitioners, the availability of dental services and an exemption to the smoking ban. It will also consider proposals by the Food Standards Agency for a number of detailed food regulations .

Earlier in the day the Committee will meet with representatives of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, they will visit the Accident & Emergency Department at Craigavon Area Hospital and tour the site of the new mental health facility in the grounds of the hospital, which is due to be complete by March 2008.
