The meeting opened, in private, at 10.55am

1. Chairperson's business

1.1 The Chairperson reported that he had received a letter from the Chairperson of the Committee on Procedures regarding a review of the legislative process in the NI Assembly and seeking comments by 31 January 2001. It was agreed that the matter would be discussed further at the next meeting of the Committee on 10 January.

2. Minutes of the last meeting

2.1 The minutes of the meeting of 12 December were agreed.

3. Matters Arising

3.1 The Committee Clerk reported that Professor Patrick Buckland had resigned as co-ordinator of the North West and Ireland Trade Group and had taken up a new post with Liverpool City Council.

Agreed - that Mr Buckland should be invited to a future meeting of the Committee.

3.2 The information from the Committee for the Centre on the Economic Policy Unit was circulated to members.

Agreed - that the Economic Policy Unit should be invited to give a presentation to the Committee.

4. Any other business

4.1 The Committee Clerk advised that Dr Aideen McGinley the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Culture, Arts, and Leisure was giving a presentation to relevant Committees on Thursday 8 February on "Unlocking Creativity: Strategy for Development".

5. Energy Inquiry

5.1 A list of names of organisations/individuals who might be invited to make written submissions on the Energy Inquiry was circulated to members.

Agreed - that those on the list, along with some additional names suggested by members, should be invited to make written submissions.

Mr McClarty joined the meeting at 11.05am
Ms Lewsley left the meeting at 11.07am

Agreed - that a Public Notice announcing the Energy Inquiry should be inserted in four newspapers - the Belfast Telegraph, the News Letter, the Irish News and the Irish Times.

6. Strategy 2010

6.1 The first draft of the Strategy 2010 report was circulated to members. It was agreed that the report would be discussed in detail at the next Committee meeting. A response from the Department on the progress of the Strategy 2010 recommendations was also circulated to members.

Agreed - that those organisations who made written submissions and also gave oral evidence should have their written submissions printed and included in the report. And that the remaining written submissions should be placed in the Assembly Library.

7. Visits

7.1 Agreed - that the visit to the Scottish Enterprise and the Committee for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning should take place on 24 January 2001.
