SPORT RELIEF BECKONS FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure is counting down the days until Sunday’s Sport Relief event in Belfast city centre.

After training for five weeks, Committee Chair Barry McElduff MLA and Committee member Kieran McCarthy MLA will both participate in the event and, between them, hope to cover seven miles.

Chair of the Committee Barry McElduff said: “Kieran and I have been training for over a month for Sport Relief and we’re both really looking forward to Sunday.

“We can’t promise to complete the event in record time, but it’s great to be able to support a fantastic cause, raise awareness of the Committee’s work and hopefully encourage more people to get involved in sport or physical activity.”

The Members are taking part in the event to highlight the Committee’s Inquiry into the low levels of adult participation in sport and physical activity.

Notes to Editors:

Under the Programme for Government 2008-2011, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure has a target for halting the decline in adult participation in sport and physical recreation by securing 53% participation. The Committee is concerned that all steps are taken as necessary to meet that target.
