5 June 2009PRESS RELEASEAC05/08/09NEW COMPTROLLER AND AUDITOR GENERAL FOR NORTHERN IRELANDThe Northern Ireland Assembly will consider a motion on Tuesday to nominate Mr Kieran Donnelly as the next Comptroller and Auditor General for Northern Ireland. The nomination, which will be made in the names of the Chairs of the Public Accounts and Audit Committees, will be voted on by Members of the Assembly. Mr Donnelly’s nomination follows an open recruitment competition chaired by the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mr William Hay, MLA. Commenting on the role of the Comptroller and Auditor General, Paul Maskey, MLA, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee said: “ The Comptroller and Auditor General plays a key role in the arrangements for ensuring that government is held to account for the use of public resources.” Robin Newton, MLA, Chairperson of the Audit Committee noted: “ I welcome the nomination of Mr Donnelly as the next Comptroller and Auditor General for Northern Ireland. Subject to the completion of the nomination and approval process, I wish him well in his new role.” ENDSNotes to Editors1. The Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) is the head of the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) with responsibility for the external audit of public expenditure on behalf of the Northern Ireland Assembly 2. The C&AG is an Officeholder of the Assembly and is appointed under s65(1) of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 by Her Majesty on the nomination of the Assembly. 3.
