PRESS RELEASE15 November 2010AC02/10/11STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE NORTHERN IRELAND ASSEMBLY COMMISSIONToday at the NI Assembly, Peter Weir, MLA, on behalf of the Assembly Commission introduced the first stage of the Assembly Members (Independent Financial Review and Standards) Bill. The Bill is in two parts. Part one will establish an Independent Financial Review Panel which will determine all aspects of financial support for MLAs. Part Two of the Bill will lead to the establishment of an independent Northern Ireland Assembly Commissioner for Standards who will carry out investigations into allegations of misconduct by MLAs. Peter Weir, Member of the Assembly Commission said: “We welcome the introduction of this important Bill. It will provide a much needed independent process to determine MLAs’ salaries, allowances and pensions. This, for the first time, means MLAs will no longer be involved deciding their own financial support package. This is an important step in improving openness, transparency and accountability at the Assembly.”Ends For media enquiries, please contact: |
