The meeting opened at 11.30am in public session. The Clerk in the Chair.
Nomination of Convenor
In the absence of the Convenor, the Clerk called for nominations for the position of Convenor. Mr Robinson proposed that Mrs Bell be the Convenor for this meeting. Dr McDonnell seconded this and the nomination was accepted.
There being no further nominations the Clerk put the question without dabate.
Resolved, that Mrs Bell, being the only candidate proposed, be the Convenor of this Sub Committee meeting.

3. Approval of draft minutes
The minutes of the previous meeting on 3 September 2002 were agreed and signed by the Convenor.
4. Matters arising
None.
5. Inquiry into the remit and workload of a Standing Committee on EU Affairs
Evidence from The Queen's University of Belfast
The evidence session began at 11.35am. Evidence on the remit and workload of a Standing Committee on EU Affairs was taken from Professor Michael Smith, Director, Dr Lee McGowan and Miss Mary Murphy, Institute of European Studies, the Queen's University of Belfast. The minutes of evidence will appear in the Sub Committee's Inquiry report.
The representatives left the meeting at 12.13pm.
6. Any other business
Mr McElduff suggested and members agreed to ask the Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body to give oral evidence to the Sub Committee at a future meeting.
Dr McDonnell suggested and the members agreed that the Deputy Chair of the Oireachtas Select Committee on European Affairs be invited to attend with the his Chairperson on 8 October 2002.

The next meeting of the EU Affairs Sub Committee will take place on Tuesday, 1 October 2002 at 11.00am in Room 152, Parliament Buildings.
The Convenor adjourned the meeting at 12.17pm.
