PROCEEDINGS OF THE SUBGROUP ON POLICING AND JUSTICE MATTERS

Minutes of the meeting held in part private / public session on Monday,

The meeting commenced at 1.11pm in private session.

1. Apologies

Fred Cobain (Mr Kennedy attended the meeting as UUP representative in place of Mr Cobain)

Gerry Kelly (Mr McCartney attended the meeting as SF representative in place of Mr Kelly)

2. Declaration of Interests

Members declared the following interests:

The Chairperson informed members that at some point he may have to leave the meeting to move a motion in the Plenary, and that Mr George Dawson would take over the Chair for the rest of the meeting.

The meeting moved to public session at 1.16pm

3. Evidence Session on the Draft Policing (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Northern Ireland) Order 2007

The Minister, Mr Paul Goggins MP, and Northern Ireland Office officials, Mr Steven McCourt and Mr Robert Crawford joined the meeting at 1.16pm.

The Minister gave an overview covering the purpose of the legislation and the key issues it covered.

Mr Paisley joined the meeting at 1.31pm.

Mr Dawson took the Chair at 1.59pm.

The Minister and officials answered members’ questions on the draft Order and agreed to provide further information/clarification on a number of issues.

The Chairperson thanked the Minister and officials for their attendance and they left the meeting at 2.23pm.

4. Date of Next Meeting

The Subgroup will next meet at 12.00 noon on Tuesday, 9 January 2007 in the Senate Chamber, Parliament Buildings.

The meeting adjourned at 2.24pm.
