Sub-Group on Policing and Justice

On 23 November 2006, following a direction from the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt Hon Peter Hain MP, the Assembly’s Business Committee established a Committee on the Programme for Government to consider the priorities for a new Executive and to make preparations for restoration. At its meeting on 27 November, the Committee agreed a work programme up to 30 January 2007. This included the setting up of a number of sub-groups including the Sub-Group on Policing and Justice. The Sub-group is chaired by Mr William Hay MLA.

The Sub-Group’s terms of reference are:

To consider -

  • the administrative structures for the creation of a new policing and justice department;
  • matters or issues relating to the devolution of policing and justice and its timing;
  • support for the rule of law; and

To identify the matters to be the subject of a request in relation to the devolution of policing and justice, under section 4(2)(A) of the Northern Ireland Act 1998;

To report to the Committee on the Programme for Government by 3 January 2007. *

And to report to the Committee on the Programme for Government by 12 January 2007
