Inquiry into the Dioxin Contamination Incident, December 2008

The Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development agreed the aim and terms of reference at its meeting of 5th May 2009.

Aim

“To establish the sequence of events and actions of all relevant parties in relation to the dioxin contamination incident of December 2008 with a view to producing a report of recommendations in order that the likelihood of a reoccurrence of such an incident and resultant effects on the Northern Ireland agriculture and food processing industries can be minimised.”

Terms of reference

  1. To establish an accurate timeline in relation to the sampling, testing, confirmation, communication and follow-up in respect of dioxin contamination of live animals, meat and other products;
  2. To establish and clarify the key roles, responsibilities and inter-relationships of relevant authorities and in respect of the sampling, testing, confirmation, communication and follow-up in respect of dioxin contamination of live animals, meat and other products;
  3. To identify the strengths and weaknesses of the key roles, responsibilities and inter-relationships of relevant authorities and in respect of the sampling, testing, confirmation, communication and follow-up in respect of dioxin contamination of live animals, meat and other products ; and
  4. To make recommendations arising out of the above investigation to protect the Northern Ireland agricultural industry
