The Enterprise Trade and Investment Committee released a report this week following its inquiry into the development of renewable energy in Northern Ireland. Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and heat. According to the Committee’s report, Northern Ireland has huge potential to generate such energies.

As a result of its inquiry the Committee believes the Government needs to do more to support businesses in Northern Ireland to develop renewable energy. Most importantly, the Committee believes Government needs to make one Department responsible for energy, and that this Department should develop a long-term plan for our energy future.

Today the Committee hosted an event for businesses and organisations interested in renewable energy. From the number of people that attended, there is obviously a lot of interest in this subject. Speaking before the event, the Chair of the Enterprise Trade and Investment Committee explains why the Committee decided to look into this issue, and why it felt it was important to hold today’s event.
