Members observed two minutes’ silence.

2. Private Members’ Business

2.1 Motion – The Bain Report

Proposed: That this Assembly notes the recommendations made by Professor Sir George Bain in the Report of the Independent Strategic Review of Education and calls on the Minister for Education to defer any decisions on the Report until the Northern Ireland Assembly is restored.

2.2 Amendment

Proposed: At end insert:

‘; and in the meantime, to work with all of the education providers to develop a draft sustainable schools’ policy for consideration by the restored Assembly.’

2.3 Motion – Equality Commission

Proposed: That this Assembly notes the recent publication by the Equality Commission of its Annual Monitoring Report on the Northern Ireland workforce, and calls on the Commission to investigate trends in recruitment, particularly in the public sector, in order to ensure that the workforce being recruited is a reasonable reflection of the working age population in Northern Ireland.

2.4 Amendment No.1

Proposed: Leave out from ‘calls’ to ‘order’ and insert:

‘welcomes its continuing analysis of trends in recruitment and its work’.’

2.5 Amendment No 2

Proposed: Leave out all after ‘recruitment’ and insert:

‘, both for a substantial period in the public sector and recently in the private sector, in order to establish if appointments have favoured one section of the community and, if necessary, to take and/or recommend appropriate action.’

2.6 Amendment No.3

Proposed: Leave out from ‘particularly’ to ‘sector’ and insert:

‘and overall composition across all levels and grades in both the public and private sectors’
