The Assembly met at 10.30 am, the Speaker in the Chair

1. Personal Prayer or Meditation

Members observed two minutes’ silence.

2. The Speaker’s Business

2.1 The Speaker informed Members that Royal Assent had been signified on 23 May 2008 to the Commission for Victims and Survivors Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 and the Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.

2.2 The Speaker informed Members that a meeting of the North-South Ministerial Council in Education sectoral format would be held on 28 May 2008.

2.3 The Speaker informed Members that a meeting of the North-South Ministerial Council in Health and Food Safety sectoral format would be held on 28 May 2008.

3. Executive Committee Business
3.1 Statement - Environmental Governance

The Minister of the Environment, Mrs Arlene Foster, made a statement to the Assembly on Environmental Governance, following which she replied to questions.

3.2 Statement - Northern Ireland Strategy for 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

The Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Mr Edwin Poots, made a statement to the Assembly on the Northern Ireland Strategy for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, following which he replied to questions.

3.3 Motion - Accelerated Passage Mesothelioma, etc., Bill (NIA 16/07)

The Question being put, the Motion was carried with cross-community support nemine contradicente.

3.4 Second Stage - Mesothelioma, etc., Bill (NIA 16/07)

The Minister for Social Development, Ms Margaret Ritchie, moved that the Second Stage of the Mesothelioma, etc., Bill (NIA 16/07) be agreed.

Debate ensued.

NIA Bill 16/07 passed Second Stage.

3.5 Final Stage - Libraries Bill (NIA 5/07)

The Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Mr Edwin Poots, moved that the Final Stage of the Libraries Bill (NIA 5/07) be agreed.

The sitting was suspended at 12.49 pm.

The sitting resumed at 2.00 pm with the Deputy Speaker (Mr Dallat) in the chair.

6.1 Motion- Regulation of Pharmacy Profession

Proposed: That this Assembly notes the work of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland in regulating the pharmacy profession over the last eighty years; supports the conclusions of the “Future of Pharmacy Registration, Regulation and Representation in Northern Ireland” document; and calls on the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety to update the society’s statutory framework accordingly.
